F. Carruthers Gould First World War Toby Jugs. Wilkinson Ltd. Retailed by Soane & Smith Oxford Street, London.

Knighted in 1906. Sir Francis Carruthers Gould was one of the most famous political cartoonists signing his work FCG. He was born in Barnstaple, Devon in 1844 and died in 1925. He caricatured the best set of 20th century toby jugs depicting World War One Allied Generals between 1915-1919

Although sold today as a set of 11 jugs they were potted in different quantities between 1915-1919

Price sold at 3gns (£3.15 pence) & Lord Kitchener who is said to have been produced first in a limited edition of 250? (Kitchener is not featured in the advertise posters below).

During our Olympia Fine Art Fair years we met a family member who purchased the old factory Wilkinson's (The Royal Staffordshire Pottery, Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent) where the FCG toby jugs were produced. There were many unfinished models in under-glaze awaiting the expensive enameling and gilding decoration, presumably coloured only as ordered ..Although limited in their production numbers not all were completed to the full edition quantity making some models difficult to find and a full set hard to achieve. General Botha commands the highest price with King George V holding his price well as his Majesty is collected with Royalty Commemoratives, his title "Pro Patria" signifies the patriotism of the British Empire, the unity of which enabled the great allied victory.

Vic Schuler's book- British Toby Jugs 3. page 90. lists nine of the eleven FCG tobies in their potting order.

Limited Edition World War One Toby Jugs c1915-19

A full set of the eleven Wilkinson Toby Jugs from left to right, top row: General Botha, Marshal Joffre, Marshal Foch, President Wilson, Sir Douglas. Haig, Lord French,

Bottom row left to right: Lord Kitchener, Lloyd George, King George V, Admiral Beatty & Admiral Jellicoe.

We are fortunate to have two of the advertising posters from the 1915-19 toby series & King George V is illustrated below in his under-glaze colours without his enamel and gilding decoration. Please note that the "unfinished " FCG's haven't the value of the wonderful coloured toby jugs from this series...... As with most "white" toby jugs produced in the 18th 19th & 20th century their value should only be a fraction of the prices realized of more desirable well coloured models.
